Dogville
This clip has evidently been filmed in an amateur way such that the camera movements appear shaky which can give audiences the feeling of being physically there within the scene. This effect was most likely achieved by filming with a handheld camera, The clip starts off with a long panning, establishing shot, which introduces two characters in their location. Shortly after this, the audience see the characters' faces and the camera pans between the two characters as they speak, during a medium close up shot. This is done in order for the audience to see the characters' emotions in relation to their dialogue. The scene continually uses shaky, panning shots in order to put the audience on edge. This is different to what is commonly seen in movies as, in a higher budget film, precision and perfection during the filming process would be key. However, the lack of this aspect allows for the audience to feel different to how they usually would, while watching a movie. This can add a sense of uniqueness to this movie which is why it is classed as being an arthouse film. There is also some not-so-smoothly-done zooming in and out of Tom's face which adds to any awkwardness that the audience may feel.
The editing within the clip varies as the first transition is a straight cut which then turns into a jump cut. This jump cut adds to the idea of the film being amateur as the two clips are edited together in quite a choppy manner. Throughout the clip, there becomes a habit of jump cuts which further creates an on-edge feeling for the audience,
The sound within the clip, although it has been probably edited on, is supposed to be diegetic background noise from other characters within the clip. There also seems to be a sound bridge between 0:32 and 0:35 when Tom is speaking.
I think that the target audience of this movie would probably be people from the ages of 25 onwards. This is because the nature of this movie seems to be quite complex to understand. A younger audience may find difficulty in attempting to grasp the essence of this movie,
The genre is likely to be a Drama since in this clip, emotion is expressed in quite a serious way which could lead to a lot of events occurring in the movie.
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind
A handheld camera seems to have been used during the filming of the movie which gives the narrative a documentary type feel which could make the movie feel more real, in contrast to the actual happenings of the movie itself. This clip starts off with over the shoulder shot which then tilts downwards. It then progresses into a series of medium shots which includes a shot-reverse-shot during the two characters' conversation. There then becomes an establishing shot which is interesting as usually the establishing shot would occur before the action of the clip. However, this clip took a different approach to introducing this scene. After this, shots vary between medium shots, medium close-ups and then a close-up on the male's feet as he is walking.
The sound in the clip includes diegetic dialogue as well as a sound bridge which sounds like a voiceover, of the man talking, As this sound bridge begins, the audience hears soft music playing lightly in the background which adds to the emotion of what he is saying. They can also hear the water flowing, which is a diegetic sound. However, it is unclear whether the water is actually there or not. It also seems that the woman's voice then becomes faint which is most likely a non-diegetic voice over, then becoming diegetic as the lady enters back into the clip.
Low-key lighting is used throughout with what appears to be a torch or flashlight, due to the dimly lit surroundings that the characters are in. This creates shadows which show realisticness within the scene. The characters are so engrossed in what they are saying, that they are oblivious to what is going on. However, since the audience are aware of what's happening, this gives a sense of voyeurism from the audience's perspective as they are watching in on the entire scene.
The editing is pretty straight forward with various straight cuts. However, there has been an effect added on top when the female says 'Meet me in Montauk' which emphasises her whisper and makes it sound quite dream-like.
I think that this movie would appeal to young adults ranging from the ages of 16 to about 25 years old as the narrative is about love which is usually admired by the younger generation.
I think that the genre of this movie is perhaps a romance film since the two characters seem to be in love, which becomes evident when they kiss.
Donnie Darko
The majority of this clip is a continuous tracking shot that begins with a tilt from the side, and turns 90 degrees clockwise, It also begins in slow motion whilst the characters are walking into their school building. It also allows for the camera shot to start off as a medium shot and then transition into a long, panning, establishing shot of the school's entrance. Various editing skills have been displayed here, such as the slow motion effect and the speeding up of different parts of the clip. There is also consistent panning and zooming displayed throughout the entire scene. However, the cuts itself are just straight cuts between each clip.
The mise-en-scene of this clip effectively allows for the audience to understand the setting of the narrative. This is because the characters are dressed in smart attire which suggests that they are in a school environment which is also evident due to the use of the 'school bus.' The sun's glare shows on the camera lens, suggesting that the scene is set during the day time. The lighting is therefore natural lighting which would be expected during this time of day and also since the scene has mostly been filmed outdoors,
The sound is non-diegetic since a soundtrack called 'Head Over Heels' has been added over the clip. Therefore there is no dialogue in this clip, as the focus is on the music as well as the actions within the clip. At the end there is some dialogue, just as the screen fades out to black,
I think that the genre of this film is a drama film because it seems to be set in a school where a lot of drama would usually occur,
The target audience is also likely to be adolescents as the scene itself is based on teenagers which would allow for this audience to perhaps relate themselves to the characters and specifically identify with the protagonist.
Diva
The costume is quite casual with the man wearing trousers and a shirt. However, the lady is dressed slightly more classy, sporting a dress and various necklaces. This suggests that the two characters could be on a date. The lighting within this clip is varied, as it is natural lighting. However, it is mostly quite gloomy and dark. The editing used is quite basic as it is pretty much just straight cut after straight cut.
There is no dialogue, however the sound is mainly non-diegetic as a soundtrack called 'Sentimental Walk' had been edited over the top of the clip. There is also, towards the end, the sound of birds chirping which is assumed to be a diegetic sound, given that the scene is taking place in the outdoors,
I think that the genre of this film is romance since the clip features both a woman and a man who seem to be in love - they are smiling at each other and walking together which suggests this.
I think the target audience would be young adults from around 18 to mid twenties since this is usually the generation who is very interested in love and romance, However, since the film is from 1981, it could also appeal to those who were young adults in those times (therefore middle aged, now) and are looking back on how different things were back then.
Three Colors: Blue
This clip consists entirely of a scene based on and accompanied by music which is being played. It begins with an extreme close up panning shot of music notes on a music sheet, with presumably a piano playing in the background which is diegetic sound. This could be perceived as being a point of view shot. There is then a medium shot from an angle of the assumed protagonist, a female who is staring down at the music sheet, It then returns to the panning of the music sheet, It continues in this way in a shot-reverse-shot style until there is a close-up of the lady's hand. A medium shot is then used as the piano top shuts down.
The sound used is diegetic, as the piano shuts, a loud bang sound can be heard which can build tension, especially with the facial expression of the protagonist being so stern, which further adds to the tension.
The editing consists of mainly straight cuts and a blur effect had been used during the editing process when the audience sees the music notes. However, this could've simply been manual focus used during the filming portion of the production. Ironically, the lighting has a blue tint to it when the camera is filming the music notesheet. This could be linking to the title of the film. Otherwise, the lighting is quite dim, low-key lighting.
I think the target audience would be middle aged adults since the narrative seems to be quite dark which would generally be preferred by an older audience.
I think the genre is mystery as the character is not saying anything therefore the main focus seems to be the actions within the scene, This therefore creates suspense which offers an enigma code to the audience to which they'd respond by wanting to find out what will happen next.
