Film Language Analysis

Blade Runner

Storyline: I think that Blade Runner is about a man (Harrison Ford) who is escaping danger as the title of the movie suggests so. The tagline 'man has made his match' connotes that the storyline of this movie will contain a man who is against his 'match'. Since the poster features a woman on it, it is likely that the 'match' is this woman and that's most likely who he will be running from. The woman could be perceived as being the femme fatale as she has a stern facial expression and is holding a cigarette which connotes a 'bad-girl' persona.

Genre: The genre of this movie, I think, is action/sci-fi because the poster connotes sci-fi from the bright, futuristic light which is shining from behind Ford’s character.

Target Audience: I think that the target audience would be adults from the ages of about 20 all the way up until their 40s since sci-fi tends to be an old fashioned genre. The movie was also made in the 80s which is evident due to the cartoon-like characters, which shows that it was geared towards the younger generation of the 80s.

Scary Movie 2

Storyline: I think that 'Scary Movie 2' would be based on the stereotypes of a scary movie as the expressions on each character's face suggest various different reactions to what would typically occur in a common horror movie. The text on the two ladies' shirts are also quite humorous. The lady in the green's shirt is ironic because people usually hate dead people, especially in a scary movie.

Genre: The genre of Scary Movie 2 is Parody because it is mocking scary movies and is in fact a comedy movie rather than a scary movie. In particular, it is mocking the movie 'Scream' whose title was originally going to be 'Scary Movie'.

Target Audience: The fact that this movie is part of a franchise shows that it was previously successful and is geared mainly towards fans of the prequel. These existing fans would most likely be from teenagers to young adults since they tend to find parodies and prank type humour, funny.

Uzak

Storyline: This movie poster has a colour scheme which is very dark, suggesting that the movie is based on a negative theme of perhaps loneliness. The fact that the main character featured on the poster's face isn't visible suggests that the movie isn't so much based on the character himself, but rather the location of which he is in or the journey he may be embarking on.

Genre: I think that the genre of this film could be Drama because the colours used suggest that the main character will be going through a series of dark events.

Target Audience: I think that the target audience would most probably be middle aged adults due to the fact that the colours used in the poster are quite dull and dark instead of being bright and colourful which tend to appeal more to children. Therefore, it is likely that this film wasn't made for the younger audience but rather an older generation who are likely to understand the meaning of the movie, better.

I'm Not Scared

Storyline: I think that this film will follow the life of the boy on the poster when he embarks on an adventure that puts him in a situation whereby he has to face any fears he may have. The fact that the picture on the poster has been shot from a low angle from the viewers' point of view, where the boy is looking straight down/ahead suggests that he is lost and is not sure where to go or that he has found an interesting place and wants to fearlessly take that route.

Genre: I think that the genre of this movie could either be thriller or adventure. It could be a thriller because the title contains the word 'scared' in it which suggests horror. However, it could also be an adventure movie because the image displayed on the poster is of a boy looking down, which could mean he will be going on an adventure which just happens to be quite scary for a child to do.

Target Audience: I think that the target audience would be families with younger children simply due to the fact that the character on the poster is a child. This would be effective to the branding of the movie since children may feel they could relate to whatever will be occurring in the film itself.

Sin City

Storyline: I think that this film is about people taking over their city. The guns displayed in the poster connote that the film contains violence which ties in perfectly with the title of the film, Sin City. Rain, which tends to have negative connotations, appears to be dripping down the characters. The term 'rain on your parade' could relate to the poster as it suggests that someone is ruining something. This also fits well with the movie's title as it suggests that some of the character are ruining the city. Dark colours are also used on the poster; this colour scheme is usually associated with bad events occurring.

Genre: I think that the genre of the movie is a thriller as the dark colour scheme suggests that danger is a main theme within the film. The title also suggests that scary things might happens since sins are generally pretty serious things to commit and the guns in the poster connote terror.

Target Audience: I think that the target audience would mostly consist of males but also some females, aged between around 18 to 40 years old due to the violence that the poster itself promotes - meaning it wouldn't really be geared towards children.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Storyline: This poster suggests that the movie could be based on the journey of the characters via a ship to the Caribbean. This is because the title suggests that the movie is based in the Caribbean. The phrase 'Dead Man's Chest' suggests that this is what the pirates are searching for on their journey.

Genre: The film looks like it could be a horror movie as there is a skull and fire attached to the title of the movie. However, it could also be perceived as being an adventure movie due to the faded image, included, of a ship which suggests that the protagonists will be sailing to another destination as part of a journey/adventure.

Target Audience: The fact that there is a woman and a man alongside each other could suggest that there is romance between the two. Romance is generally a theme geared towards the younger generation such as people from the ages of around 16 to 25, generally. However, this poster may also catch the attention of older adults as it contains a certain mystery element which may appeal to them.

Bride & Prejudice

Storyline: This film appears to be a mockery of another film (the title suggests it is a play on the title of another film, Pride & Prejudice) due to the exaggerated facial expressions on some of the characters' faces. It appears to be a Bollywood movie which is a connotation made due to the clothing warn by some of the characters on the poster,

Genre: Parody/Comedy since the title is somewhat related to the other film.

Target Audience: I think that the target audience could be people that have seen Pride & Prejudice. Particularly from the ages of maybe 16 to about 30 since they are likely to enjoy a good comedy movie.

Million Dollar Baby

Storyline: The picture on the poster features the three main characters who are all adults, despite the fact that the title contains the word 'baby' on it. This shows that the baby could be a plot device which is the unknown of the movie and the adult characters on the poster are those that are interested in searching for this unknown.

Genre: I think that the genre could be mystery/suspense as all three characters are looking anxiously in different directions which suggests that they are looking for the 'Million Dollar Baby'.

Target Audience: I think that the target audience would probably be young to middle aged adults who enjoy solving a mystery and following the clues. I don't think this movie would appeal to younger children as the colours used are dark, whereas children are usually attracted to brighter colours.
