Mise-en-scene Analysis of Karate Kid 2010

This is my analysis of this particular still from the Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan version of Karate Kid, which was released in 2010.

This movie still contains many detailed elements of Mise-en-scene, as I will mention below:

  • Costume - The costumes used in this still are of basic clothing. Jackie Chan's character is wearing a pair of what looks like either blue jogging bottoms or some other form of sportswear. Jaden Smith's character is wearing a similar type of bottoms which are red. Their bottoms suggest that both characters are doing some sort of exercise, which in this case, is some form of self defence.
  • Lighting - The lighting seems to be provided through the sun and is therefore considered as 'natural lighting' which is expected since the two characters are featured here, in the outdoors.
  • Actors - The actors, as mentioned above are Jackie Chan, who is known for both his superb acting and Kung Fu skills and Jaden Smith who was, at the time, quite simply known as movie stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith's son. Both actors, in this scene are posing in a stance which suggests one of them is training the other in some kind of physical activity.
  • Makeup - It is quite unclear, from the angle at which this still image as been takren, whether or not either of the characters are wearing any form of makeup. However, from my knowledge of what usually happens on movie sets, they are likely to have a little bit of powder on their faces.
  • Props - In this specific image, Jackie Chan is seen to be carrying a stick of some form, suggesting that he has been using this stick as part of whatever physical activity the two characters are partaking in.
  • Setting - The location that this still has been taken in, is seemingly a mountain which is assumed due to the fact that it surrounds other mountains. This can portray a sense of danger as a connotation of mountains is that it is perilous due to the heights at which mountains a=can reach and therefore how far down a human could fall and injure themselves from.
